Getting to Know You

Despite the fact that we might not get to meet one another in-person, I thought it made sense to open the semester by introducing ourselves.  Below, please post a brief introduction: your name, major/ year, knowledge of or interest in comics (if any), and a line or two about a favorite book/ movie/ television show/ comic to give us a sense of your taste.

I can start: I'm a professor in the English department at UC. I teach classes on contemporary American literature, especially comics, the modern novel, literary theory, and race and ethnicity.  I am happy to talk to you more about the department here at UC or other fun classes you might take or (gasp) careers you might pursue with an English degree. I love teaching this course because I really enjoy comics, particularly what has come to be called "the graphic novel," and think that comics have forever altered the contemporary literary scene and made us think about how images, like words, can tell a story.  I have countless favorite books, movies, television shows, and comics; like a lot of you, I imagine, I am a bit of a culture junky.  I'd have to say, though, that I am obsessed with the show Transparent and also enjoyed the depressing, but amazing, Cinemax show, the Knick. What about you?

  1. My name is Elysse Winget, I am a third year Creative Writing major with a minor in Communications. I have very little knowledge of comics, in all honesty. I know a lot of Marvel films derive from them, but that's about it! I am excited to learn! My favorite film would have to be the original Spiderman with Toby McGuire; it was suspenseful and in all honesty I hate that they ever made another one, despite it's accuracies.

I hope to learn a lot in this course about a type of writing I have yet to research!

  2. I'm Sofia Castagna, I am a 4 year (this is my last semester before i guraduate!) as a Fine Arts Major. I've always loved a good storyline and high quality artwork, so naturally comics have been an interest of mine. My favorite novel currently is "The Goldfinch" by Donna Tartt, I have too many favorite movies, but Finding Nemo is an all-time fav.

I'm looking forward to this comic/graphic-novel enrichment

  3. I'm Michael Callahan, I'm a third year psych student minoring in English Literature. My first exposure to comics came in the form of Batman trade paperbacks. I've devoured many. I really love the comics written by Daniel Clowes. They're exceedingly sardonic, darkly humorous but some of his stuff has quite a bit of heart (particularly Ghost World!!) I'm about to start reading the Sandman series from Neil Gaiman. As far as novels go; I'm reading Dune by Frank Herbert currently, but I recently read Girl in a Band, Kim Gordon's memoir, and absolutely loved that. In this course I hope to be exposed to some great new writers/artists and get an idea of the cultural significance graphic novels can carry.

  4. Hello! My name is Alisha Cooper and I am in my final semester of my Creative Writing degree. Growing up I read anything I could get my hands on including graphic novels. I later came to study their artworks during my time in art school and now I'm ready to study them as a whole. I'm obsessed with memoirs. I love to read about people and their lives and reflections on their actions. I've most recently read Lucy Grealy's Autobiography of a Face after reading Ann Patchett's Truth and Beauty. I loved learning about Lucy through Ann's eyes and then reading Lucy's perceptions of herself in her own book it was very interesting. I'm also obsessed with unsolved murder mysteries. Making a Murderer and This American Life's Serial have take up more of my time than I care to admit!

  5. My name is Jordan Nehring, my Major is in Information Technology, but I thought this would be a neat class to try.I used to collect comics when I was younger, it was a fun hobby growing up. I collected Teen Titans comics, Simpsons, and Sonic The Hedgehog. I am a really big fan of Jessica Jones and Daredevil on Netflix. Breaking Bad is probably my favorite series that has aired on television by far.

  6. My name is Nick Myers. I'm a senior English major. Art Spiegelman's Maus has been assigned reading in three of my previous classes. Previous instructors touched on issues of representation, debates over what counts as literature, and Maus as an ethnographic document about family, survivor's guilt, and inherited trauma. My favorite book right now is a fat anthology of essays edited by Phillip Lopate I've been working my way through since summer. Montaigne, Woolf, Borges, Stevenson, and Fuentes have pieces in Lopate's collection that keep finding their way into my writing and thinking.

  7. I'm Michelle Cappel; a first year majoring in Fine Arts. I have deep rooted love of both art and writing, but I’m not sure on what I want to do with my life yet. I don't know much about comics, so I took this class to see if it was something I might be interested in pursuing. I don't watch a lot of TV, but when I do it's definitely cartoons. I love reading, and I don’t think I could pick a favorite book, but I thought "The Darkest Minds" by Alexandra Bracken and “The Catcher in the Rye,” by J.D. Salinger were two great ones that continue to inspire me today.

I'm excited to explore the world of comics!

  8. Awesome! We have a great group with diverse interests (and good pop culture picks, which is so important!), and a number of new students have just joined our course. Please take a look at the next two posts, and post your responses by the end of the weekend! More soon...

  10. Hi all! My name is Ashley Marisa Ansari. Although my first name is Ashley I've never gone by it- I've gone by Marisa since I was younger. My parents aren't that conventional ;) I am in DAAP studying Fine Arts with Graphic Design. I am on schedule to graduate in December of 2016 (whoo-hoo!) I am very interested in this class because, as an art and design student, I believe that the fundamentals of animation/cartooning/graphics are extremely important to know for my profession. One of my all time favorite TV shows is MadMen. My ideal job is to work in at an ad agency doing what they do in MadMen, but on the computer. I love the world of advertisement and think it is the most interesting thing to study.

  11. Hello there!! My name is Danielle Townsend. I am a Dietetics major here a UC, but I used to be an Illustration major in New York. I have been in love with comics for a very long time and, before I switched majors, I have decided to pursue a career in making graphic novels. I am interested in this class because my science classes are straight boring as hell and nothing gets my blood pumping than art and comics!!! My favorite books (its a tie) are Ready, Player One? and Angela's Ashes. My current favorite tv shows are Steven Universe, Daredevil, and How to Get Away with Murder

  12. Hi everyone. I am Jenelle Shryock. My major is English Lit and I hope to graduate this summer, 13 years after I first started college! I like to write and I would love to be able to do it for a living one day. Ideally I would like to write for a news outlet. I chose this class because even though I have no knowledge of anything comic or graphic novel related, I think it is important to expose myself to different genres. It seems like it will be a fun course and I am excited to learn something new.

  14. My name is Daniel Gee, I'm a senior Criminal Justice major. I have an extreme interest in comics, I typically read two or three a day, more if I get drawn into a certain series. My favorite television show and book series are Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire. My favorite graphic novel is Watchmen, but I am also a huge fan of the Marvel universe. Anything involving the Hulk is a required read for me. The DC universe has some amazing series as well, but Marvel just seems to be more my style.
