David Small is widely known for his successful children's books. Stitches is obviously a book that is geared towards a more adult audience. This can be seen in both the book's content and his art style. What about this book do you think makes it geared more towards teens/adults. Which of McCloud's concepts relate to this stark difference? You can use samples from his other books such as "Imogene's Antlers" and "Eulalie and the Hopping Head" for reference of some of his other work.
Teenagers or adelescents could relate to the lack of true communication in the household, because that is something I would pick up on growing up. Also, the bit about David questioning his sexuality- I know a lot of teenagers go through that phase as well.
ReplyDeleteI really think that Stitches is a wonderfully executed book by David Small. I think outside of the subject matter, you can really tell how this is geared towards an older audience just by looking at the art. Its is much more Haunting than anything that you may see in his childrens book.
ReplyDeleteI think about thing that is important to note about this book is its treatment of the subject of mental illness and death as well. Its something that is mentioned throughout the book and danced around pretty heavily.
